Facebook’s “Your Algorithm” Lets Users Tune Feed and Reels Topics

Meta is bringing natural-language recommendation controls to Facebook. Users can ask for more or less of certain topics and give feedback on individual posts, with changes reflected in recommendations.

Facebook is introducing “Your Algorithm,” an AI-powered feature that lets people describe the topics they want to see more or less often in Feed and Reels. Rather than relying only on passive signals such as watch time and likes, users can state preferences in natural language. TechCrunch reported that Meta says changes can be reflected in recommendations in real time.

The feature also gives people a quicker route from an individual post to their broader preferences. Facebook’s three-dot menu includes access to “Your Algorithm” and “Interested” or “Not interested” feedback. Meta says it may ask follow-up questions to clarify what a person wants more or less of. This makes recommendation controls more conversational than a settings panel full of switches.

What user control can—and cannot—do

Natural-language controls could help people correct a feed that has drifted toward topics they no longer enjoy. Someone might ask for more local gardening videos and fewer celebrity updates, then refine the preference when the results change. The company’s description suggests an additional input into ranking; it does not say users can manually dictate every item shown or see the full formula behind recommendations.

There are also trade-offs. A system must translate broad requests into workable categories, and a preference may be interpreted differently than the user intended. Recommendations are influenced by many signals, so a single instruction may not remove all related content. People will need to review results and use per-post feedback when the system misses the mark.

Why this matters to platforms

Recommendation feeds are a major way social apps decide what gets attention. Giving people a more direct way to express preferences may improve perceived control, while still leaving the platform’s ranking system in place. Whether that leads to a more satisfying feed depends on how accurately Meta interprets requests and how consistently it applies them across formats.
